Anthropic says it is donating the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), which sits under the Linux Foundation. The company says it wants the standard to remain open, community-driven and vendor-neutral.
AAIF was co-founded by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI last year, and Anthropic had already donated the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to it. Simon Willison notes that AAIF has recently become the home of the MCP specification. He says he predicted the move in December, when Anthropic first described skills as an "open standard".
Willison also reports that he found an earlier blog post on the topic by asking Claude to search his site through the datasette-mcp plugin, which exposes his blog content to Claude.
Why it matters if you build agents
Agent Skills now look set to be governed by a neutral foundation rather than a single vendor, which may make them a safer bet for teams building agents that depend on them.
Developers should watch for the standard's specification and governance changes as they move under AAIF, since the terms of the standard may shift during the transition.
