Anthropic's quarterly revenue hits $17B as losses widen before IPO

Anthropic published an updated S-1 filing on Nov. 2 that adds third-quarter financial results, which the original filing lacked. The company reported $17 billion in revenue for the three months ended Sept. 30, more than eleven times the year-earlier figure, though quarter-over-quarter growth slowed to 47% from 144%.

Losses widened in the quarter. Anthropic took a $5 billion charge because it had to buy computing hardware on short notice at a premium, and a $2 billion charge tied to a non-cash employee donation matching program. Those charges produced a $536 million operating loss, compared with $974 million in operating income the quarter before.

Infrastructure commitments reached $895.4 billion as of Sept. 30, with leases from Google and Broadcom making up nearly a third. The filing also says Anthropic is considering requiring human review and approval for some research tasks its models now perform automatically. The offering size has not been disclosed; Bloomberg reports the company hopes to at least match SpaceX's $86.2 billion listing.

Why it matters if you build agents

Anthropic's filing says it is considering human sign-off for certain research tasks its models currently run automatically, so agent pipelines that depend on fully automated model-driven research may face new approval steps.

The large compute commitments and the cost of short-notice hardware purchases suggest capacity and pricing for model APIs could shift as the company expands its own data centers.
