datasette-llm 0.1a9 picks up LLM's default model

Simon Willison has released datasette-llm 0.1a9, an LLM integration plugin that other plugins can depend on. The update lets Datasette Agent run without a separately configured default model.

Simon Willison has released datasette-llm 0.1a9, a plugin that provides LLM integration for other plugins to depend on. The release is a small usability change, and Willison says larger upgrades to Datasette Agent are in the pipeline.

The plugin now reads the default model used by LLM. Datasette Agent can therefore start without a default model set in its own configuration. Previously, users also had to set plugins.datasette-agent.default_model, using the example gpt-6-astra, before it would run.

Willison's example launches Datasette with uvx --with datasette-agent datasette content.db --internal internal.db, with no model flag.

Why it matters if you build agents

Agent developers who use datasette-llm can drop the extra Datasette Agent model setting if LLM already has a default model configured. The plugin now depends on that LLM default, so a missing or wrong LLM default will affect Datasette Agent too.
