Generative media inference provider fal has raised $1.3 billion in new funding at a $16 billion valuation, according to Bloomberg. The money will go toward computing power and hiring, as demand for its image, video and audio models has outpaced its capacity.

Fal runs a cloud platform for image, video and audio generation models, which developers reach through a single API. Entertainment studios, advertising agencies and game developers use those models in production, and the company's in-house researchers post-train some of them to run faster. Over the past year that work has centered on video, done with both open and closed source model developers.

Co-founder and CEO Burkay Gur said demand has surged and serving it takes more compute, and that the company had to rate-limit customers at one point over the summer. Pretraining a model of its own is not on the near-term agenda, though he did not rule it out later. Annualized revenue passed $800 million earlier this year, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

Bessemer Venture Partners led the Series F, with Nvidia, Sound Ventures, HOF Capital and T. Rowe Price also participating, and Nvidia is described as a strategic investor. Fal says the round and an April Series E led by Sequoia Capital total $1.65 billion, and that investors have put more than $1.9 billion into the company. The valuation places fal just behind Fireworks AI, which closed $1.5 billion at a $17.5 billion valuation in July.

## Why it matters if you build agents

If your agents generate images, video or audio, a provider with this much new capital is likely to keep adding capacity for hosted media models. Capacity has been a constraint, since fal says it had to limit customer requests at peak demand this summer. Sources told TechCrunch that gross margins across inference companies remain thin, so pricing and rate limits are worth watching.
