Figma adds Specs for defining design rules and expands agent tools

Figma unveiled Figma Specs, a Markdown editor where teams define their design language for use by its own agents and third-party agents. The company also moved code layers into public beta and said it now supports over 20 new tools through its MCP.

Figma Specs is a Markdown editor for setting out a company's design language. The document works as a reference for teams and agents, can exist as a standalone file or inside the canvas, and can link to canvas elements, FigJam diagrams, code layers and designs. Teams can also attach design libraries, code libraries and guidelines to a centralized design system that agents can consult.

Code layers, which add code to canvas designs for more interactive prototypes, moved into public beta after a private beta in June. Users can ask the agent to turn a design into code or edit that code to iterate on a prototype. Figma also made its on-canvas agent available to a wider group of users last week.

Figma is integrating Payload, the open-source headless CMS it acquired last year, with its Figma Make product for generating dynamic websites and managing content. The announcements were made at Figma's first Config event, held in India, where the company says it has its largest market outside the United States.

Why it matters if you build agents

Agents that generate UI can be pointed at Specs and linked libraries so their output follows a brand's rules instead of relying only on prompts. Because Figma says AI output is non-deterministic, teams should still check generated designs against those rules.

The expanded MCP support means more outside agents and clients can connect to Figma, so builders should review how those connections handle access to design files.
