Markdown files opened in Google Docs keep their .md format, and a .md badge in the document header marks them as native markdown files. Teammates and AI agents can edit the same file at once, and Docs commenting, suggestions and version history record changes from both human and agent contributors.
In Google Drive, markdown files render with formatting, including tables and hyperlinks, and users can toggle to raw text without a separate viewer. Google says the underlying files are preserved for developer tools and git repositories.
The feature is available now to anyone with a Google or Workspace account. Users upload an .md file to Drive and start editing it in Google Docs.
Why it matters if you build agents
Agents that draft or maintain documentation can now work on .md files in a shared Google Docs document without a conversion step that changes the file type. Version history tracks agent edits alongside human ones, which gives teams an audit trail of changes. Agent edits made in Docs should still be reviewed before they are committed to a git repository.
