Universal Cart lets users save products they find in Search and the Gemini app into one place, including items from multiple retailers. Users can return later to find their items and shopping progress intact. Google first previewed the tool at Google I/O in May.
The cart can send notifications when a saved product's price drops or when an out-of-stock item becomes available again. Google says it can also factor in credit card perks when suggesting how to pay and surface relevant promo codes.
Checkout is tied to the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, which Google introduced earlier this year to help AI agents and retailers work together across the shopping journey. Universal Cart joins features such as conversational product discovery in Search's AI Mode and the Let Google Call tool.
Why it matters if you build agents
Developers building shopping agents can point to a live, open checkout standard in UCP that connects agents with retailers. Google's rollout shows how a consumer-facing cart can sit on top of that protocol.
Agents that handle purchases will need to account for price alerts, stock changes and card-based payment choices, which Google's cart now handles on the shopper's side.
The article covers only the U.S. launch, so teams outside the U.S. should not assume availability yet.
