Motive Technologies, a San Francisco company that sells fleet management software to trucking companies, has launched a new offering called Agents. The agents are designed to predict problems such as maintenance issues, compliance violations and safety risks, and to act on them rather than only sending alerts to managers. Motive's 2026 ROI Report found that 42% of its customers cite administrative inefficiencies as a major problem, and the company estimates fleet operators lose about $46 billion a year to preventable issues.
Existing customers can deploy the agents in minutes using a guided workflow and ready-to-use templates. Once set up, the agents can handle compliance, maintenance and safety issues without human involvement. Examples include alerting the in-vehicle assistant Atlas when a driver shows signs of fatigue, creating work orders and marking vehicles out of service when wear is detected, and prompting drivers through AI Dashcam Plus to shut off excessive idling. Customers set the conditions that trigger maintenance orders.
Motive says it plans to add more autonomy. Early next year, a feature will let teams create their own agents by describing a task. Over the longer term, the company wants fleet operators to state business goals, such as more on-time deliveries or fewer collisions, and have the agents work out how to reach them.
Why it matters if you build agents
Developers building fleet or logistics agents can see a commercial example of agents that take direct action on operational data instead of only alerting humans.
Any system that lets agents trigger work orders, vehicle status changes or driver instructions needs clear customer-defined conditions and audit trails, since the agents act without human involvement.
The planned goal-based setup suggests agent platforms in this sector will move toward objectives rather than fixed rules, which affects how teams test and monitor them.
