Neon has introduced the Neon Function Registry, a collection of ready-made functions that can be added to a project with one command. The aim is to let agents start from working code instead of spending tokens reading docs and choosing package versions.

Neon Functions are Node.js functions that run in a Neon project in the same region as its Postgres database, with enough runtime for agents that stream for minutes or hold WebSockets open. The new registry adds templates to a project with a single command. Agents can already bootstrap a function themselves, but they first have to read docs, look up best practices, work out neon.ts and pick package versions, which costs tokens and time.

The registry includes templates built with Vercel's Chat SDK, Mastra, TanStack AI and Context.dev, such as a Slack, Telegram and web chat bot that stores conversations in Neon Postgres. Other templates use Neon's own services, including Postgres REST and MCP servers, an OpenAI Agents SDK agent on the Neon AI Gateway, image generation stored in Neon Object Storage, and an authenticated API using Managed Better Auth.

Templates can be listed with a command that returns their IDs, and neon functions new -y installs the recommended setup without prompts. The command does not need a linked project or a signed-in CLI. Each template includes a README that lists required services and an example request. Neon notes that most templates do not check callers, so authentication should be added before sharing a URL that calls a paid service. Deploying requires Neon CLI 8.11.0 or later and a linked project.

## Why it matters if you build agents

Agents building on Neon can begin from a tested template rather than generating function code and configuration from scratch.

Developers should add authentication to most templates before exposing their URLs, since the templates do not verify callers by default.

Templates that use Neon-hosted services need those services added to the project, and deploys fail if required environment variables are undefined.
