OpenAI acquires Pierre Computer Company to improve Git tooling for coding agents

OpenAI is buying Pierre Computer Company, the startup behind Code Storage and several open-source developer tools. The deal is meant to make Git workflows work better as developers and AI agents write code side by side.

Pierre makes Code Storage, which stores code and tracks its history through Git. The company also builds open-source libraries called Trees, Diffs and Highlights, and OpenAI's coding agent Codex already uses them. Trees handles fast project file navigation, Diffs shows code changes and allows bug fixes in the diff view, and Highlights provides real-time syntax highlighting as code is typed or generated by an agent.

OpenAI says the tooling around Git has to keep up as agents take on more tasks in parallel. The company already runs Pando, its own version control backend built for both developers and agents. Pierre's open-source projects will stay open source, and the deal still needs regulatory approval.

Why it matters if you build agents

Teams building coding agents may get version control tooling designed for agents and developers working on the same code at once, though the source does not describe what that will look like. Pierre's libraries are already used by Codex, and its open-source projects are set to remain available. Until regulators approve the deal, the acquisition is not complete.
