OpenAI has made its Decisions API generally available, giving all customers access to a fast, low-cost decision model. The model is a reconfigured version of ChatGPT Luna, and early customers say it sharply cut the time their agents and apps need to act.

OpenAI has made its Decisions API available to all customers, after first announcing it at its developer day on September 29. Decision models choose among a set of options and attach a confidence rating to the choice. Instead of training a dedicated model, OpenAI reconfigured ChatGPT Luna to run faster and cheaper.

According to OpenAI's product lead for APIs, Nikunj Handa, response times fell from one to three seconds to between 100 and 180 milliseconds. OpenAI also added voice and visual modalities to the public version and targeted inference resources by region to reduce latency. Box, Datadog, Ramp and Speak tested it in place of LLM calls, and Speak said it cut the time between actions from 1.4 seconds to 0.13 seconds.

The category is crowded. TypeSafe, whose Jev model popularized these models, released a new version with its own rankings last week, and Liquid's D1 Ultra and Base Lab's Elephant-1 also rank highly on public indexes. On the AIM System One Index and the Artificial Analysis Decision Index, OpenAI's model placed eighth and fourteenth, while the latest Jev ranked seventh and third.

## Why it matters if you build agents

Developers can now call a fast, low-cost OpenAI model for option-picking steps in place of a full LLM, such as routing or high-frequency decisions in real-time flows. Public benchmarks disagree on which decision model leads, so test candidates on your own workload before switching. Latency and cost may matter more than raw accuracy for your fit.
