PaperPilot is a PDF and document toolkit written in Rust by KrushnaVardhanReddy. The same core engine is exposed through an MCP server, a command-line tool, a WebAssembly build for browsers, a desktop app and a local REST API on port 7823. The project says files are processed locally or in browser memory and are not uploaded.
The MCP server, paperpilot-mcp, runs over stdio and can be added to Claude Desktop or Cursor through a claude_desktop_config.json entry. Version 0.6 covers merging, splitting, rotating, reordering and extracting pages, compression, plain text extraction, OCR through PaddleOCR on the rten runtime, watermarking, signature validation and a PII scan.
Building from source requires Rust 1.75 or later, along with Node.js and pnpm for the desktop app. The community edition is licensed under Apache 2.0, while enterprise features such as SSO, RBAC, audit logs and DLP are developed separately.
Why it matters if you build agents
Agents connected over MCP can run local PDF operations such as merging and compressing without sending documents to a hosted service. The same operations are reachable from the CLI and REST API, so scripts and agents can share one behavior. The roadmap lists conversions, encryption and redaction as future releases, so developers should check which operations exist in their installed version before relying on them.
