Perplexity open-sources SPACE, a Firecracker microVM sandbox for agents

Perplexity has released SPACE as open source under Apache 2.0, the sandbox platform that runs each task in Perplexity Computer. Each agent task gets its own Firecracker microVM, and credentials and outbound traffic are controlled from outside that VM.

Perplexity has open-sourced SPACE, the sandbox platform behind every task in Perplexity Computer. Each agent task runs inside its own Firecracker microVM.

Credentials and outbound traffic are controlled from outside that VM rather than inside it. The code is published on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license.

The report describes SPACE as a production-tested isolation layer for teams building coding or browsing agents. The available text is a short excerpt, so details such as setup steps and supported configurations are not covered here.

Why it matters if you build agents

Developers building coding or browsing agents now have an open-source example of running each task in a separate microVM with credential and network control kept outside the sandbox.

Teams considering a similar design can read the Apache 2.0 code on GitHub to see how the isolation is implemented before adopting it.
