Pydantic AI has released v2.61.0, dated 2026-10-23. The release adds structured citations to TextPart and normalizes citations returned by Bedrock, OpenRouter and xAI. Citations are now replayed in message history to the provider that produced them, and they are kept in the Vercel AI adapter.
Several compatibility notes affect existing code. A provider-specific thinking setting from a broader scope now triggers a warning when it overrides thinking, and google_multi_speaker on GoogleRealtimeModel is deprecated because no Gemini Live model supports it. A file in a CohereModel tool return now raises NotImplementedError instead of being silently dropped.
Other changes include support for async auth functions in the hosted MCP capabilities, a Shell.max_log_bytes setting that bounds background and shell job logs, and new kimi-k3.1-pro model names. Fixes cover guardrails, BrowserUse prohibited lists and cleanup of Exa runs that a cancelled poll leaves behind.
Why it matters if you build agents
Agents that display or store model citations can keep them structured across turns with providers that return them, and the Vercel AI adapter now retains them as well.
Code that depends on thinking settings or on google_multi_speaker should be reviewed before upgrading, since the new warning and the deprecation change what happens at runtime.
Tool returns that contain files on CohereModel will now fail loudly, so agents that pass files through Cohere tools need a different path.
