Dropbox plans to acquire Tigris Data for $350M in its largest deal yet

Dropbox said Thursday it plans to acquire Tigris Data for $350 million. The company told Crunchbase News the deal would be its largest acquisition since it was founded in 2007. Tigris, a Sunnyvale, California company founded by former Uber engineers, runs a network of localized data storage centers that it says can handle the distributed compute needs of modern AI workloads.

Tigris has raised about $31.9 million since its founding in 2021, according to Crunchbase data. Its October 2025 Series A brought in $25 million, led by Spark Capital, with Andreessen Horowitz and Basis Set Ventures participating. The purchase would give Dropbox a storage platform built for developers whose applications run across multiple cloud providers.

Dropbox describes the move as a significant shift in its AI strategy, as it expands from file storage and sharing into selling the infrastructure companies use to build AI applications. It also unveiled DBX Agent Cloud, which will initially offer standalone object storage for large collections of data, including images, video and files used to train and run AI models. Crunchbase counts four Dropbox acquisitions across 2024 and 2025.

Why it matters if you build agents

Teams that build agents on multi-cloud storage may get a new option from Dropbox through DBX Agent Cloud, but the deal is described as planned, so terms and availability could still change before it closes.

Developers who depend on Tigris today should watch how its product, pricing and support evolve if the acquisition goes through.

Storage used to train and run models is a dependency worth reviewing now, since the offering is aimed at AI developers.
