OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a mid-range model that it says pushes cost-to-performance further than its predecessors. Input tokens cost $1 per million and output tokens $5, compared with $2 and $12 for GPT-5.6 Terra. Cached inputs drop to $0.05 per million tokens. The model is available now for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and through the API.
Artificial Analysis says GPT-6.1 Terra gains 6 points on its Intelligence Index over GPT-5.6 Terra at maximum reasoning effort, at $0.40 per task versus $1.40. At lower effort levels, the gains reach 7 to 13 points. On the private AA-Omniscience benchmark, the model guesses 38 percent of the time when it lacks an answer, down from 88 percent for GPT-5.6 Terra.
OpenAI positions the model for automated software control. On Agents' Last Exam it matches GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the token price, and on Terminal-Bench 4.0 it solves 50.3 percent of tasks at maximum effort, up from 21.5 percent. The system card reports a 98.8 percent defense rate against indirect prompt injection, up from 96.2 percent for GPT-5.6 Terra.
Why it matters if you build agents
Developers running computer-use or coding agents on OpenAI's API now have a cheaper mid-range option, with cached inputs at $0.05 per million tokens. The figures come from OpenAI and Artificial Analysis, so teams should test on their own workloads before switching. OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra for the most demanding coding tasks.
