Musk says Grok Bot usage limits were cut because serving it cost too much

Some Grok Bot users found their weekly usage limits maxed out over Halloween weekend, and Elon Musk confirmed the change was deliberate. He said the cost of serving the bot was too high relative to its revenue, and has not yet said how limits will change going forward.

Over Halloween weekend, some Grok Bot users reported that their weekly usage limits had jumped from as low as 50% to 100% without any activity on their part overnight. Musk confirmed in an X post on Sunday, November 1, that this was not a glitch, replying to a user that the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue.

The change comes as SpaceX, which recently became publicly traded, said in a filing last month that AI makes up 52% of company income. Its renamed Super Intelligence division posted a profit of $431 million, though that figure would have been higher without $1.2 billion in one-time costs tied to the company's acquisition of Cursor.

Musk has not said how subscribers' usage limits will be affected from here on. He has kept promoting Grok Bot as a way to shop for gifts, without addressing the limits on his main feed.

Why it matters if you build agents

If you build on Grok Bot or plan to, its usage ceiling can change without notice and cut into a quota your agent already depends on. Check how limits reset and monitor consumption before routing production workloads through it.

Build in fallbacks for when a provider throttles you, so a sudden cap does not stall your agent.
